Vivo, Inc and Real Networks (formerly Progressive Networks) were the original pioneers in the delivery of real-time streaming and broadcasting for multimedia. Microsoft more recently entered the battle with a major commitment to expand and further streaming technology solutions for the web.  Stepping up the timetable and going head-to-head with Real Networks, Microsoft is now gaining momentum thanks to its improved WMV-9 "Corona" playback and encoding technologies.

What exactly is streaming media?

STREAMS are compressed and encoded packets of data delivered to the end-user from special servers or http servers (standard web servers). 'Streaming' technologies enable multimedia and other high bandwidth data to be viewed in real time streams of data. The process entails special compression schemes called codecs which enable the data to be buffered and viewed while the file is downloading. This circumvents the need for the file to completely download to the user's computer before being able to view and hear its contents.

Streams can originate from live broadcasts or downloaded from source files on special servers, enabling better synchronization between audio, text, images, and video. Furthermore, streams can be encoded for playback on multiple connection speeds depending on the end-user's bandwidth capability.

While streaming video is still heavily constrained on low-bandwidth connections, in26 to 56K modem scenarios, for example, high-speed connections such as DSL/Cable/LAN/T1 enable clear, crisp, and smooth video delivery as well as larger display size. This capability has been enhanced with the recently-released Windows WMV-8 and Real Networks RealVideo-8 codecs.

Streaming media represents one of the most exciting areas of technological development for the internet today, and as more of the general population moves to high bandwidth solutions, it almost certainly will become the standard for "live" multimedia communications on the web.
